Designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and treat a wide variety of emergencies that may occur in pediatric patients. The course emphasizes the importance of systematic assessment, basic life support and advanced life support treatment algorithms for infants, children and adolescents. PALS certification is often required for all healthcare workers who may treat children in an emergency
PALS certification is often required by hospitals and organizations nationwide. This course provides you with the skills necessary to manage common emergency situations that occur in the pediatric population while providing comfort to patients' families during this stressful time.
The PALS course includes classroom instruction, skills practice and hands-on practice with mannequins.
Classroom Instruction: The course begins with an overview of the principles of pediatric assessment and management. You'll learn how to identify common signs and symptoms of illness in infants, children, adolescents and pregnant women; perform a physical exam on patients who are awake or sleeping; assess for injuries using tools; interpret lab results; recognize shock/dehydration warning signs; administer medications correctly under emergency conditions; use appropriate equipment like suction devices when needed during resuscitation attempts at home or work settings (e.g., schools).
Skills Practice: During this phase you'll be expected to demonstrate knowledge through practical exercises related specifically towards performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques properly before moving onto more advanced skills such as airway management techniques using intubation devices or alternative methods like bag valve mask ventilation techniques if necessary
The instructor in this course will use the AHA PALS course video and a series of simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to a pediatric assessment, basic life support and the Pediatric Advanced Life Support treatment algorithms.
The student will be able to perform an effective primary survey on an infant or child who is not breathing normally, has no pulse, or whose heart is not beating effectively. The student should also be able to recognize potentially life threatening situations requiring immediate intervention (e.g., severe respiratory distress). Upon completion of this course, students should have sufficient knowledge and skills necessary for performing first aid on children up through puberty, typically 8 or 9 years old;
AHA certification is a required for many healthcare workers who may treat children in an emergency. For example, it's required by most hospitals and other medical facilities that employ EMTs or paramedics at the entry level. It also helps to ensure that you have what it takes to provide quality care when responding to pediatric emergencies, so even if your job doesn't require AHA training per se, having this credential on hand could help get your foot in the door with some employers in your area who do require it!
