The AHA’s ACLS course builds upon the foundation of lifesaving BLS skills, emphasizing the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR. The course reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC). The objectives include:
The American Heart Association (AHA) offers an ACLS Training course that teaches participants how to recognize and treat cardiac and respiratory arrest, peri-arrest conditions, and stroke. The course also teaches participants how to manage airway obstruction and perform basic life support skills such as chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device, and use of an AED. Participants learn how to recognize and respond correctly to cardiac arrhythmias with medications when appropriate. The course also addresses pharmacology; for example, the drugs used to treat hypertension are not effective for treating hypotension during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The AHA’s BLS Course provides the foundation for saving lives after cardiac arrest. Reflecting science and education in the 2020 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC, this course teaches basic life support skills for application in both in-facility and prehospital settings, with a focus on high-quality CPR, improvement of chest compression fraction, and high-performing team dynamics.
The AHA’s BLS Course offers
• Content representing the latest resuscitation science for improved patient outcomes
• Realistic scenarios, simulations, and animations depicting rescuers, teams, and patients
• Course and content flexibility for AHA Instructors and students, including adaptability to local protocols
