American Heart Association ACLS Provider Renewal Certification

ACLS is a standardized course that builds on the foundation of basic life support (BLS) skills, emphasizing the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR. It also covers airway management and related pharmacology. In this course, skills are taught in large, group sessions and small, group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented.

The ACLS program is designed to provide training in an organizationally effective environment that promotes learning by integrating didactic instruction with hands-on practice skills acquisition. This will ensure that each participant receives appropriate instruction based on their skill level while providing ample opportunities to practice these new techniques under supervision until they become comfortable enough to perform them independently without direct supervision or guidance from instructors or peers

ACLS Course Curriculum - American Heart Association Certification Training Class

The following is a list of key topics covered throughout the course. Click on each topic for a more in-depth description.

  • The AHA science of resuscitation and recognition of signs of clinical deterioration.

The ACLS course will provide an overview of the science behind resuscitation, including the recognition and treatment of life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and other cardiovascular emergencies. This course will help participants recognize the signs and symptoms that accompany cardiovascular collapse, understand why they occur, intervene appropriately and safely, manage difficult airway situations, use medications safely in a real-world setting (including prioritization), choose appropriate monitoring devices when performing CPR or managing patients with known conditions that may impact their health status such as diabetes mellitus or recent surgery

  • BLS Skills Practice Session

During this session, you will practice all of the skills that you learned in class. You will be able to perform CPR on a manikin and use an AED to shock a simulated heart attack victim. You will also have the opportunity to use suction devices, bag valve masks, pocket masks and nasopharyngeal airways.

  • Airway Management Skills

    - Recognize Respiratory Arrest

    - 1-Rescuer Bag Mask Ventilation

    - 2-Rescuer Bag Mask Ventillation (BVM) with Airways and Pulse Oximetry

    - OPA/NPA Insertion Techniques (Oropharyngeal Airway [OPA], Nasopharyngeal Airway [NPA])

    - Use of Oxygen and Suction

  • Bradycardia Algorithm - Preventing Arrest and Treatment

Bradycardia is heart rate between under 60 beats per minute.

    - Symptoms: Decreased pulse, syncope (fainting), angina (chest pain) or shortness of breath on exertion.

  • Tachycardia Algorithm - Preventing Arrest and Treatment

Tachycardia is a heart rate faster than 100 beats per minute. Tachycardia is a symptom of an underlying problem and not a condition in and of itself. This section of the course will discuss the symptoms, causes, treatment options and complications associated with tachycardia.

Tachycardia may be due to the following conditions:

    - Atrial fibrillation (AF) or flutter (AFL)

    - Sinoatrial node reentry tachycardia (SART)

  • Team Dynamics

Team dynamics are critical during ACLS. Communication is key to a successful resuscitation and teamwork is essential to the smooth functioning of your team.

It is very important that you know how to communicate with your team members during an ACLS scenario. You should be able to effectively communicate with each other, especially when making decisions about treatment priorities and whether or not the patient needs transport to a hospital or other facility. In addition, good leadership skills are necessary in order for your team members to feel confident in their abilities while saving lives under stress-inducing conditions. There are several ways that leaders can motivate others:

    - Setting goals helps individuals focus on what they need to do at any given moment; this means setting clear expectations for yourself and others as well as rewarding individuals who exceed them (or penalizing those who fall short). If a patient has been given epinephrine but still isn't responding after 10 minutes, then maybe it's time for another dose! Or maybe it would be best if someone else took over CPR efforts because yours seemed ineffective thus far."

  • Written Exam

Students must complete the open note 50 Question multiple choice exam with a score of 84% or higher to pass this course.

    - The test consists of 50 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and is open notes, meaning you can bring your notebook with you and take notes in class. You will be provided with an American Heart Association ACLS provider manual for reference during the examination process. Your instructor will provide feedback on incorrect answers once the test has been completed. Students may retake the exam up to 3 times. Once students have passed this course they will receive an American Heart Association Card valid for two years from date of issue.
